Anyone Want a Placenta??

As most of you know...I work in the NICU (Neonatal ICU). We see some pretty crazy stuff. I thought this story was especially wierd.

The NICU has to go on some of the high risk deliveries, in case something goes wrong. A few days ago there was an Oriental couple having a baby, and the grandmother was in there. After the baby was born, the grandmother...who didn't speak English...wanted to keep the placenta. The doctor asked what she was going to do with it and the mother said, "Eat it!" Gross...Gross...Gross! Unfortunately, the mom had a high fever so the grandmother couldn't take it because it was probably infected. Talk about a different kind of stew! Yuck!!

What was really wierd is that I have a class in Growth and Development at GA STATE. The teacher actually mentioned this custom in class 2 days after Kelly told me this story. She also mentioned a culture where people plant the plecenta under a new tree sappling.
